To find your moon sign: 1. Enter your date of birth using the date picker. 2. Optionally enter your birth time in 24-hour decimal format. For example, 2:30 PM is entered as 14.30. If you do not know your birth time, the calculator defaults to noon (12:00), which is reasonable for most dates but may be inaccurate near sign transitions. 3. The moon sign calculation uses a known astronomical reference point: Reference: 6 January 2000 at 12:00 UTC, when the moon was at 0 degrees Cancer (90 degrees ecliptic longitude). The moon moves approximately 13.176 degrees along the ecliptic per day. To find the moon's position at any date: 1. Calculate the number of days (including fractional days from the birth time) between the reference date and the birth date. 2. Lunar longitude = (90 + days since reference x 13.176) % 360 degrees. 3. If the result is negative (for dates before the reference), add 360 to bring it into the 0-360 range. 4. Sign index = floor(lunar longitude / 30), mapping to: 0 = Aries, 1 = Taurus, 2 = Gemini, ... 11 = Pisces. 5. Degree within sign = lunar longitude % 30. Moon phase calculation: The synodic period (new moon to new moon) is 29.53059 days. Using 6 January 2000 at 18:14 UTC as a known new moon reference, the calculator determines how many days into the lunar cycle your birth falls and maps this to eight phase names: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Waning Crescent.
