Discover your sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign from your birth details
This is a simplified birth chart for entertainment purposes. Results use approximate astronomical algorithms and may differ from professional astrology software that uses precise ephemeris data. Sun sign dates can vary by a day depending on the year.
A birth chart, also known as a natal chart, is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. In Western astrology, the three most important placements are your sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign (ascendant). Together, these three signs form the foundation of your astrological profile and offer insight into your personality, emotional nature, and outward presentation. Your sun sign is determined by the date of your birth and represents your core identity, ego, and life purpose. Your moon sign, determined by the moon's position at your birth, reveals your emotional instincts and inner needs. Your rising sign, which depends on your birth time and location, describes how others perceive you and the first impression you make. This calculator uses simplified astronomical algorithms to compute all three signs from your birth details. While professional astrology software uses precise planetary ephemeris data, this tool provides a good approximation for entertainment and self-exploration. Sun sign calculations are accurate for most dates, though results on cusp days (when the sun transitions between signs) may vary by a day depending on the year.
To generate your simplified birth chart: 1. Enter your date of birth using the date picker. 2. Enter your birth time in 24-hour format as a decimal number. For example, 2:30 PM is entered as 14.30, midnight is 0, and noon is 12. If you do not know your exact birth time, use 12 (noon) as a default, but note that this may affect your moon sign and rising sign accuracy. 3. Enter your birth latitude in degrees. London is approximately 51.5, Edinburgh is 55.9, Manchester is 53.5, and Cardiff is 51.5. For southern hemisphere locations, use negative values. 4. The calculator instantly shows your sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign, each with a brief description of its meaning. 5. The sun and moon positions are shown in degrees within their respective signs for additional detail.
This calculator uses three separate algorithms: Sun Sign: Determined from the birth date using standard Western zodiac date ranges (e.g. Aries runs from 21 March to 19 April). The sun spends approximately 30 days in each sign. Moon Sign: Uses a known reference point (6 January 2000 at 12:00 UTC, when the moon was at 0 degrees Cancer, or 90 degrees ecliptic longitude). The moon moves approximately 13.176 degrees per day. The calculator computes the number of days between the reference date and your birth date/time, multiplies by 13.176 to find the total lunar movement, then determines which 30-degree zodiac segment the moon occupies. Rising Sign (Ascendant): The ascendant is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth time and location. The calculation uses the approximate sun longitude (based on days since the spring equinox, multiplied by 0.9856 degrees per day), adds a shift based on birth time (each hour shifts the ascendant by approximately 15 degrees), and applies a latitude adjustment. This is a simplified approximation; true ascendant calculation requires more complex spherical geometry. All three results map the calculated ecliptic longitude to one of the 12 zodiac signs (each occupying 30 degrees of the 360-degree ecliptic).
