Tracking food points is a proven method for managing your diet and making healthier food choices. This calculator provides a UK-focused points tool with built-in presets for common British foods, from a full English breakfast to fish and chips, baked beans, and digestive biscuits. Whether you enter nutrition values manually or select from the preset list, the calculator instantly shows the points value based on a formula similar to the Weight Watchers (WW) SmartPoints system. The points system works by assigning a numerical value to each food based on four key nutritional factors: calories, saturated fat, sugar, and protein. Foods that are high in protein and low in saturated fat and sugar score fewer points, encouraging you to choose nutrient-dense options. This approach goes beyond simple calorie counting by accounting for the nutritional quality of what you eat. With common UK food presets built in, you can quickly check the points value of everyday items without needing to look up nutrition labels. This is especially helpful for home-cooked meals and traditional British dishes where exact nutrition data might not be readily available. All preset nutrition data is based on average UK food composition values from sources including Public Health England and McCance and Widdowson's Composition of Foods.
To calculate food points: 1. Choose your input mode. Select "Enter nutrition values" to input data manually from a food label, or select "Choose from common UK foods" to use a built-in preset. 2. If using manual mode, enter the calories (kcal), saturated fat (g), sugar (g), and protein (g) from the food's nutrition label. Use the "per serving" values for the portion you are eating. 3. If using preset mode, select a food from the "Common UK Food" dropdown. The calculator will automatically use the stored nutrition values for that item. Options include banana, apple, chicken breast, salmon fillet, cheddar cheese, baked beans, white toast, full English breakfast, fish and chips, digestive biscuit, and pint of lager. 4. View your results. The calculator displays the total points value, the food name, a nutrition summary, and a chart showing how calories, saturated fat, sugar, and protein each contribute to the score. 5. Compare different foods by switching between presets or entering different values to find lower-points alternatives for your meals.
The points calculation uses the same formula whether you enter values manually or use a preset: Points = (Calories x 0.0305) + (Saturated Fat x 0.275) + (Sugar x 0.12) - (Protein x 0.098) The result is rounded to the nearest whole number, with a minimum of zero. When you select a UK food preset, the calculator looks up the average nutrition values from its built-in database. For example, a medium banana contains approximately 105 kcal, 0.1g saturated fat, 14g sugar, and 1.3g protein. These values are fed into the formula to produce the points score. The formula rewards protein-rich foods and penalises those high in saturated fat and sugar. This is why a 150g chicken breast (248 kcal, 47g protein) scores only 3 to 4 points, while a full English breakfast (800 kcal, 15g saturated fat) scores 25 or more despite both being protein-containing meals. The difference comes from the saturated fat and sugar content. The preset values represent average portions of common UK foods. Actual values will vary depending on the brand, preparation method, and exact portion size. For the most accurate results, weigh your food and use the values from the specific product's nutrition label.
