Split Bill Calculator

Divide a restaurant bill fairly among diners with tip and service charge

Splitting a restaurant bill fairly is one of those everyday challenges that can cause surprising amounts of friction among friends, family, and colleagues. In the UK, where group dining at restaurants, pubs, and cafes is a regular social activity, being able to quickly divide a bill -- including any tip or service charge -- is an invaluable practical skill. The most common approach in the UK is to split the total equally among all diners, regardless of what each person ordered. While this may not always feel perfectly fair if one person had a starter and water while another had three courses and cocktails, it is widely considered the socially acceptable default. If you prefer to pay only for what you ordered, most UK restaurants are now willing to split payments across multiple cards. Understanding how service charges and tips interact with bill splitting is particularly important in the UK. Many restaurants add an optional service charge of 12.5% to the bill, especially in London and larger cities. Since the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 came into effect in 2024, all tips and service charges must be passed on to staff in full -- employers can no longer retain any portion. This means your tip or service charge genuinely benefits the people who served you. If you choose to pay the service charge, there is no expectation to tip on top of it.

How to Use This Calculator

To split a restaurant bill using this calculator: 1. Enter the total bill amount as shown on your receipt. This should be the pre-tip, pre-service-charge amount unless you want to include those in the split manually. 2. Set the number of people sharing the bill. This can be any number from 1 upward -- even large groups. 3. Adjust the tip percentage if you wish to add a tip. In the UK, 10-15% is standard for good table service. If a service charge is already on the bill, you can set the tip to 0%. 4. Toggle the service charge option if your restaurant includes one. The default 12.5% is the most common rate in UK restaurants, but you can adjust this in the advanced options. 5. View the breakdown. The calculator shows the per-person amount (the key figure), the grand total including all charges, and a pie chart showing how the bill breaks down between the original amount, service charge, and tip.

How It Works

The split bill calculation follows these steps: Service charge = bill amount x service charge percentage / 100 (if enabled) Subtotal = bill amount + service charge Tip = subtotal x tip percentage / 100 Grand total = subtotal + tip Per person = grand total / number of people For example, a GBP 120 bill for 4 people with a 12.5% service charge and 10% tip: service charge = GBP 15, subtotal = GBP 135, tip = GBP 13.50, grand total = GBP 148.50, per person = GBP 37.13. Note that the tip is calculated on the subtotal (including service charge), not on the original bill alone. In practice, if a service charge is already included, most diners in the UK would not add an additional tip, so you would typically use either the service charge or the tip, but not both. All amounts are rounded to 2 decimal places. Due to rounding, the sum of individual per-person amounts may occasionally differ by a penny from the grand total -- this is normal and the person who organised the meal traditionally covers any rounding difference.
