Plaster Quantity Calculator

Calculate bags of plaster for walls and ceilings

Plastering is one of the most common trades in UK home improvement, whether you are skimming over new plasterboard, replastering old walls, or finishing a loft conversion. Getting the plaster quantity right is essential because plaster has a limited working time once mixed -- typically 45 minutes for multi-finish and up to an hour for bonding coat. Running out mid-wall means a visible join line, so having the correct number of bags on site before you start is critical. Plaster is sold in 25kg bags in the UK, with different products designed for different applications. Multi-finish (also called skim coat) is the most common, applied in a thin 2-3mm layer over plasterboard or bonding coat to create a smooth, paintable surface. Bonding coat is a thick undercoat plaster (8-11mm) used on blockwork, brickwork, or damaged walls to create a flat base for the skim. Hardwall is similar to bonding but dries harder and is used on high-impact areas. One-coat plaster combines the undercoat and finish in a single application at 12mm thickness. This calculator computes the total area to be plastered (walls plus ceiling), determines the number of 25kg bags needed based on your chosen plaster type and thickness, and adds a 10% wastage allowance. The wastage covers mixing losses, material left in the bucket, and over-application in uneven areas.

How to Use This Calculator

To calculate how much plaster you need: 1. Enter the total wall area in square metres. For a rectangular room, the wall area is 2 x (length + width) x height. Deduct windows and doors if you want a precise figure, or leave them in for a small safety margin. 2. Enter the ceiling area if you are also plastering the ceiling. The ceiling area equals the room length x width. 3. Select the plaster type. Multi-finish is for skim coats over plasterboard or bonding coat. Bonding is for undercoats on masonry. Hardwall is for high-impact areas. One-coat combines undercoat and finish. 4. Adjust the thickness in advanced options if needed. Multi-finish defaults to 2mm, bonding to 11mm. Thicker application uses more plaster. 5. Review the total area, bags needed, total plaster weight, and wastage allowance. Order the total bags shown (which already includes the wastage).

How It Works

The plaster quantity calculation works as follows: Total area = wall area + ceiling area. For a room with 40 m2 of walls and 12 m2 of ceiling: 40 + 12 = 52 m2. Each plaster type has a standard coverage rate per 25kg bag at its recommended thickness: - Multi-finish: 7.5 m2 per bag at 2mm - Bonding coat: 2.5 m2 per bag at 11mm - Hardwall: 2.5 m2 per bag at 11mm - One-coat: 3.5 m2 per bag at 12mm Raw bags = total area divided by coverage per bag, rounded up. For multi-finish: ceil(52 / 7.5) = 7 bags. Wastage allowance = 10% of raw bags, rounded up. For 7 bags: ceil(7 x 0.1) = 1 bag. Total bags needed = raw bags + wastage = 7 + 1 = 8 bags. Total plaster weight = total bags x 25kg = 8 x 25 = 200 kg. If you are applying bonding coat to the same area: ceil(52 / 2.5) = 21 bags, plus 3 bags wastage = 24 bags (600 kg). This illustrates why thick undercoat applications require significantly more material.

Store plaster bags in a dry location and check the use-by date -- plaster has a shelf life of approximately 3-6 months. Once a bag is opened, it deteriorates faster in humid conditions. When estimating for a full room renovation, you may need both bonding coat and multi-finish: first apply bonding to the masonry, then skim with multi-finish once the bonding has set. Count each application separately. Professional plasterers in the UK typically charge 150-200 GBP per room for skimming and 300-500 GBP for full replastering including bonding coat.
