Estimate the value of a private registration plate in the UK
This calculator provides rough estimates only. Actual private plate values depend on market demand, buyer interest, and current trends. Use as a guide, not a valuation.
Private number plates are a popular investment and personalisation option for UK motorists, with the DVLA generating over GBP 160 million per year from personalised registrations. Whether you are curious about the value of a plate you already own or considering purchasing one, understanding the factors that drive pricing helps you make informed decisions. The value of a private registration depends on several key factors. The plate type is the most significant: dateless plates (the oldest format, with no year identifier) command the highest premiums because they can be assigned to any vehicle regardless of age. A short dateless plate like "AB 1" can sell for tens of thousands of pounds, while an extremely desirable combination could reach six figures at DVLA auction. Prefix plates (A123 ABC format, issued 1983-2001), suffix plates (ABC 123A format, issued 1963-1983), and current-style plates (AB12 ABC, issued from 2001) are progressively more affordable. Character count also matters significantly. Shorter plates are rarer and more visually distinctive, which increases desirability. Plates that spell recognisable names or words attract a premium because of the personal connection buyers feel. A plate reading "J4 MES" or "S4 RAH" has obvious appeal that a random combination lacks. This calculator provides rough estimates based on plate type, character count, and desirability factors. Important: actual values depend heavily on current market demand, the specific combination of letters and numbers, and buyer interest at the time of sale. These figures should be used as a general guide only, not as a formal valuation.
To estimate a private plate value: 1. Select the plate type from the dropdown. Choose "Dateless" for plates with no year identifier (e.g. AB 1, JB 50), "Prefix" for the A123 ABC format, "Suffix" for the ABC 123A format, or "Current" for the AB12 ABC format issued since 2001. 2. Enter the total number of characters on the plate (letters and numbers combined, excluding spaces). For example, "AB 1" has 3 characters, "A123 ABC" has 7 characters, and "JB 50" has 4 characters. 3. Toggle "Spells a name or word?" to yes if the plate reads as a recognisable name, word, or abbreviation. This includes initials that match common names (e.g. J4 MES for James) or words (e.g. B055 for Boss). 4. Toggle "Short plate (4 or fewer characters)?" to yes if the plate has 4 or fewer total characters. Short plates are visually distinctive and command a premium. 5. Review the low, mid, and high estimates. The mid estimate represents a typical asking price; the low estimate reflects a quick sale price; the high estimate reflects what a motivated buyer might pay for a particularly desirable combination. The transfer cost includes the standard GBP 80 DVLA assignment fee.
The valuation model uses base values and multipliers to estimate a range: Base values by plate type: Dateless: GBP 5,000 (rarest, most valuable type) Prefix: GBP 500 (A123 ABC format, 1983-2001) Suffix: GBP 400 (ABC 123A format, 1963-1983) Current: GBP 250 (AB12 ABC format, 2001 onwards) Character count multiplier: 2-3 characters: x10 (very rare, highly sought after) 4 characters: x5 (uncommon, desirable) 5 characters: x2.5 (moderately scarce) 6 characters: x1.5 (slightly above standard) 7 characters: x1 (standard length, baseline value) Additional multipliers: Spells a name or word: x3 (personal connection drives demand) Short plate (4 or fewer characters): x4 (visual impact, rarity) Estimated value = base value x character multiplier x name multiplier x short plate multiplier The range is calculated as: Low estimate = estimated value x 0.5 (quick sale or less desirable combination) Mid estimate = estimated value (typical asking price) High estimate = estimated value x 2 (motivated buyer, highly desirable combination) Transfer cost = mid estimate + GBP 80 (standard DVLA assignment fee) Important: these are rough guides based on general market patterns. Specific plates may sell for significantly more or less than these estimates depending on the exact combination, current trends, and the presence of motivated buyers at auction. Always check recent comparable sales before making purchase or sale decisions.
