Find the minimum cage size for your hamster based on species and group size
Choosing the right cage size is one of the most important decisions you will make for your hamster's welfare. Hamsters are active, burrowing animals that need considerably more space than many pet shops suggest. An undersized cage leads to stress behaviours such as bar chewing, excessive wheel running, and aggression. The RSPCA recommends a minimum floor area of 5,000 cm2 (100 x 50 cm) for Syrian hamsters and 4,000 cm2 (80 x 50 cm) for dwarf and Roborovski species. These are bare minimums, and many hamster welfare organisations advocate for even larger enclosures. If you keep more than one dwarf hamster together, the cage needs to be at least 30% larger per additional animal. Our hamster cage size calculator helps you determine the minimum dimensions, recommended wheel size, and bedding volume based on your hamster species and group size. Use it as a starting point and aim for the largest enclosure your space and budget allow.
To find the right cage size for your hamster: 1. Select your hamster species. Syrian hamsters need the largest cages and must always be housed alone. Dwarf and Roborovski hamsters have slightly smaller minimum requirements. 2. Enter the number of hamsters. Note that Syrian hamsters must live alone. Dwarf and Roborovski hamsters can sometimes live in same-sex pairs or small groups if introduced young. 3. Toggle the exercise wheel option. An appropriately sized wheel is essential for hamster health. Syrian hamsters need at least a 28 cm wheel, while dwarf species need 18-20 cm. 4. Review the minimum floor area, recommended dimensions, wheel size, and bedding volume needed for a suitable 15 cm deep substrate layer.
The hamster cage calculator uses RSPCA minimum guidelines as a baseline: Base Floor Area by Species: - Syrian: 5,000 cm2 (100 x 50 cm) - Dwarf: 4,000 cm2 (80 x 50 cm) - Roborovski: 4,000 cm2 (80 x 50 cm) For multiple hamsters: Minimum Floor Area = Base Area x (1 + 0.3 x Additional Hamsters) Each additional hamster adds 30% more floor space to reduce territorial stress and provide adequate resources. Recommended Wheel Size: - Syrian: 28 cm diameter (to prevent back arching) - Dwarf: 20 cm diameter - Roborovski: 18 cm diameter Bedding Volume = Floor Area x 15 cm depth / 1,000 A 15 cm bedding depth allows natural burrowing behaviour. The volume is converted from cm3 to litres by dividing by 1,000.
