Estimate your UK gas bill based on your house type, usage, and current Ofgem price cap rates.
Estimates based on Ofgem price cap rates effective Q1 2026. Actual costs depend on your tariff, supplier, and usage patterns. Rates change quarterly.
Gas heating accounts for the largest share of energy costs for most UK households. With the Ofgem price cap changing quarterly and energy prices remaining a top concern for consumers, understanding exactly what you are paying for gas is more important than ever. This gas cost calculator estimates your monthly and annual gas bill based on your house type (or a custom usage figure) and the current Ofgem price cap rates. It breaks down costs into usage charges and standing charges, so you can see where your money goes. Whether you are comparing tariffs, budgeting for the winter, or thinking about energy efficiency improvements, this tool gives you the numbers you need.
To estimate your gas costs: 1. Select your house type. The calculator uses typical annual gas consumption figures from Ofgem for each property type: flats average around 8,000 kWh, terraced houses 11,000 kWh, semi-detached 13,500 kWh, and detached homes 18,000 kWh. If you know your actual usage, select "Custom Usage" and enter the figure in kWh. 2. Check your actual usage on your energy bill or smart meter app if possible. This gives a much more accurate estimate than the typical figures. 3. For advanced options, you can adjust the unit rate and standing charge. The defaults are the current Ofgem price cap rates, but if you are on a fixed tariff or a different deal, enter your actual rates for precision. 4. View the results to see your estimated monthly, annual, and daily gas costs, along with a breakdown of usage charges versus standing charges.
The gas cost calculation is straightforward. Annual gas usage in kWh is multiplied by the unit rate (in pence per kWh) and divided by 100 to convert to pounds. This gives the annual usage cost. The standing charge is calculated separately: the daily standing charge (in pence) is multiplied by 365.25 days and divided by 100 to give the annual standing charge in pounds. The total annual cost is the sum of usage cost and standing charge. Monthly costs are derived by dividing annual figures by 12, and the daily cost is the annual total divided by 365.25. The typical usage figures come from Ofgem Typical Domestic Consumption Values (TDCVs), which are based on analysis of actual UK household energy consumption. These are averages; your actual usage may vary based on insulation quality, boiler efficiency, number of occupants, and heating habits.
This calculator uses Ofgem price cap rates effective Q1 2026. The price cap is updated quarterly and your supplier may offer different tariffs. VAT at 5% is included in the Ofgem cap rates shown. If you are on a fixed tariff, your rates may differ from the cap. For the most accurate cost estimate, use the unit rate and standing charge from your most recent gas bill.
