Carpet Area Calculator

Calculate how much carpet you need with wastage

Buying the right amount of carpet saves money and avoids the frustration of running short mid-installation. Carpet is sold by the square metre in the UK, and you need to account for wastage from trimming, pattern matching, and fitting around obstacles like doorways, alcoves, and radiator pipes. Most carpet fitters recommend adding 10% to your measured area as a standard wastage allowance. UK carpet rolls typically come in widths of 4 metres or 5 metres. If your room is wider than the roll width, you will need a seam, which requires additional carpet for overlap and pattern alignment. For simple rectangular rooms, the calculation is straightforward: length multiplied by width plus the wastage percentage. For irregular shapes, you may need to break the room into rectangles, calculate each area separately, and add them together. In addition to the carpet itself, you need gripper rod (also called gripper strip) around the perimeter of the room. Gripper rod is a thin strip of wood with angled tack pins that hold the stretched carpet in place. The total length needed equals the room perimeter minus any doorway openings. Underlay is also essential and is typically purchased to match the carpet area exactly. This calculator covers the carpet area, wastage, gripper length, and an estimated cost based on your chosen price per square metre.

How to Use This Calculator

To calculate how much carpet you need: 1. Measure the room length in metres. Measure from wall to wall at the longest point, including any alcoves that will be carpeted. 2. Measure the room width in metres at the widest point. 3. Set the wastage allowance percentage. Use 10% for simple rectangular rooms, 15% for rooms with alcoves or bay windows, and 20% for complex shapes or pattern-matched carpet. 4. Toggle gripper rod on or off. You need gripper for standard stretch-fit installation. Turn it off only if you are using carpet tiles or adhesive installation. 5. Optionally adjust the price per square metre in the advanced options to get a cost estimate. UK carpet prices typically range from 10 to 80 GBP per square metre depending on quality. 6. Review the results: room area, total area with wastage, gripper length, and estimated cost.

How It Works

The carpet area calculation is straightforward: Room area = length x width. For a room measuring 5m x 4m: 5 x 4 = 20 m2. Wastage area = room area x wastage percentage / 100. At 10% wastage: 20 x 0.10 = 2 m2. Total carpet needed = room area + wastage area = 20 + 2 = 22 m2. Gripper rod length = room perimeter = 2 x (length + width). For our example: 2 x (5 + 4) = 18 metres. In practice, you deduct for doorway openings and add a small amount for waste when cutting strips. Estimated cost = total carpet area x price per square metre. At 20 GBP per square metre: 22 x 20 = 440 GBP. This covers the carpet only -- add underlay (typically 3-8 GBP per m2) and fitting costs (typically 4-8 GBP per m2) for the complete installed price. The calculator also shows a breakdown of usable area versus wastage as a pie chart, helping you visualise how much of your purchase is productive versus trimming waste.

When ordering carpet from a UK retailer, be aware that the carpet will be cut from a roll of fixed width (usually 4m or 5m). The retailer calculates the length of roll needed based on your room dimensions and the roll width. This may result in more waste than the percentage allowance suggests, particularly for narrow rooms where a wide roll is the only option. Ask your carpet supplier for a cutting plan and compare the total area of carpet in the cutting plan against the calculator result.
