Estimate how much bird seed or fat balls your garden feeders need
Feeding garden birds is one of the most popular wildlife activities in the UK, with over half of households putting out food regularly. Whether you have a single hanging feeder or a full feeding station, knowing how much seed, fat balls, or ground mix to buy helps you budget and ensures your feeders never run empty. The amount of food your feeders get through depends on several factors: the number of feeders, the type of food, how many birds visit your garden, and the time of year. Bird traffic increases significantly in autumn and winter when natural food sources become scarce, and birds need extra calories to survive cold nights. Our bird feed calculator estimates weekly consumption, monthly and annual costs, and how often you need to refill your feeders. The calculations are based on average UK prices for quality bird food and typical consumption rates recommended by the RSPB.
To estimate your bird feeding costs: 1. Enter the number of feeders you have or plan to install. More feeders attract more birds and allow different species to feed without competition. 2. Select the feeder type. Seed tubes are the most common and attract finches, tits, and sparrows. Fat ball holders are excellent for winter feeding. Ground trays attract robins, blackbirds, and dunnocks. 3. Choose the bird traffic level. Low traffic is typical for new feeders or exposed gardens. Medium is average for established suburban gardens. High traffic occurs in mature gardens surrounded by hedgerows and trees. 4. Select the season. Birds consume roughly 30% more food in autumn and winter than in spring and summer. 5. Review the weekly feed requirement, monthly and annual costs, and how often you need to top up each feeder.
The bird feed calculator uses base consumption rates per feeder type: Seed Tube: 0.5 kg per feeder per week at GBP 2.00 per kg Fat Ball Holder: 6 fat balls per feeder per week at GBP 0.30 each Ground Tray: 1.0 kg per feeder per week at GBP 1.50 per kg These base rates are adjusted by two multipliers: Traffic Multiplier: - Low: 0.5x - Medium: 1.0x - High: 1.5x Season Multiplier: - Spring/Summer: 1.0x - Autumn/Winter: 1.3x Weekly Feed = Number of Feeders x Base Rate x Traffic Multiplier x Season Multiplier Monthly Cost = Weekly Cost x 4.33 (average weeks per month) Annual Cost = Weekly Cost x 52 Refill Frequency (days) = Base Refill Days / (Traffic Multiplier x Season Multiplier) Base refill days: seed tube 7 days, fat ball holder 5 days, ground tray 4 days.
